New Count

40. Saslong Classic

40. Saslong Classic

World Cup Races in Gardena-Gröden will be subject to new counting rules starting this year. In the past, the count was based on the number of speed events that have taken place on the Saslong.

It has now changed and will reflect the number of World Cup seasons instead. Fiftyone speed events took place on the World Championship course of 1970 including 45 Downhill and 6 Super-G races. In 2006, the 50th edition of the Saslong Classic took place which, based on the original count, meant that races 52 and 53 are scheduled for this year and races 54 and 55 for next.

As mentioned above, the new rules will not be based on the number of speed events but rather the number of World Cup seasons in Gardena-Gröden. This is in line with the count by the International Ski Federation FIS and also simplifies it. (FIS celebrated its 40th World Cup Season with the „Champions Celebration“ in Gardena-Gröden two years ago.) While FIS’s first World Cup season in Gardena-Gröden dates back to the winter of 1966-67, the first World Cup race in Gardena-Gröden took place in the winter of 1968-69.

Therefore, Gardena-Gröden’s 40th World Cup season kicks off in December 2007 and we will celebrate the „40th Saslong Classic“.
