Online Press Clippings for Friday, 12/14

With little to report on the performance of US and Canadian skiers from Val Gardena/Gröden, the English-speaking press focused pretty exclusively on the Norwegian “speed master”. He clearly dominated the Super-G today at the same time building on his lead in the Overall World Cup. See what the (English-speaking) online-press had to say.

CNN reports on Svindal’s victory in Gardena/Gröden quoting the Norwegian’s tweet after his latest triumph: “Oh yeah!!! Good times in Val Gardena. Podium with two local guys. Couldn't let the Italians have all the fun," Silver medalist Marsaglia from Italy described his fellow skier’s performance in no uncertain terms: “Aksel Lund Svindal is from another planet but I consider myself the best of the terrestrials. He made mistakes but despite that he is still a second in front of everyone.”

Yahoo News had more quotes from the 2007 and 2009 World Cup champion Svindal: “I trained really well in the summer and I'm in the form of my life ... It was a very demanding course, full of turns and it suits me. I skied over the limit at times and it could have cost me dearly," he said. Well, looks like Svindal continues to tighten his grip on the men’s Alpine skiing World Cup.

Ski Racing had more of the winner’s quotes: "On the top part, I charged hard and I didn't make mistakes, so I was 30 seconds ahead, so that's where I laid the base for winning the race, I guess," said Svindal. "You had to ski aggressively and that's exactly what I did." adding that the Saslong is a dark race in the best of conditions and today (12/14) the conditions included an incoming snow storm and fog that made the many bumps all but invisible for the 66 men that contested her flanks.

The Associated Press focuses on the fact that Svindal’s clear victory is even more impressive given his big mistake three gates before the Finish Line: "I heard on the radio that everyone was losing time to the Italian guys at the last split," Svindal said. "I definitely didn't want to give anything away at the bottom, so I was charging and I came tight in there ... and then I hit a bump ... It's just reflexes, really you don't have time to think about it. Definitely not what I planned to do. I had a high heart rate before that but that definitely raised it. I was pretty close to losing my balance."
