Downhill: Aksel Lund Svindal starting with Bib 18
Will Aksel Lund Svindal be able to finally capture a Downhill victory after today’s Super-G win and two very convincing training runs? We will know more when he finishes tomorrow’s race. But not all will have been decided by then, as Eric Guay (bib 21) has shown in the two training runs that he is certainly ready to challenge Svindal.
Tomorrow’s World Cup Downhill race, the 51st on the Saslong, will be opened by Andrej Sporn (SLO). But excitement is already beginning earlier, with Peter Runggaldier will start as one of the forerunners. The 1991 Silver World Champion and 1995 Super-G World Cup champion knows the Saslong better than anyone else and, despite his 45 years of age, is not afraid to take on the Camel Humps, the Ciaslat meadow or the Wall. It will be interesting to see how far he will lag behind the younger athletes. “He is an old fox when it’s about picking the right line. He might be able to leave quite a few younger skiers behind, even 13 years after his retirement.” says Peter Fill, who has been training with Peter Runggaldier on the Saslong the last week. And speaking about Fill: the native of nearby Kastelruth and his team colleague Werner Heel are facing the Downhill with quite some anger. Fill is upset about his gate mishap in the Final Schuss which cost him a 3rd place and brought him quite a few bruises instead while Heel is dissatisfied because he wasn’t able to capitalize on today’s opportunity. He placed third in last year’s Super-G on the Saslong, but ended up 11th in today’s race. Heel and Fill will be starting with bib 8 and 9, respectively. The other Italian contender, Dominik Paris, is officially not starting after taking a fall during the first raining run. Svindal and Guay will be facing Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud (bib 10) and Manuel Osborne-Paradis (CAN, bib 30). Another strong contender who has won here in the past, Steven Nyman, will be ready with bib 5. The Saslong is known for skiers with higher numbers to meddle at the top, which is why eyes will also be on Hans Olsson (bib 63) and Silvan Zurbriggen (bib 47). Both started with bibs beyond 40 in the training runs and still placed in the top ten.
