First Home Race for New FIS Race Director

Markus Waldner is the new FIS Race Director. The South-Tyrol-native is following into the foot steps of Günter Hujara and is kicking off this role with his first “home game” at the World Cup races in Val Gardena/Gröden. Mr. Waldner has already made a great impression.

So far, Mr. Waldner’s first few weeks on the job have been marked by sub-optimal weather conditions. The snow is definitely missing on the Alps this season but nevertheless, the Saslong has been brought to almost perfect conditions thanks to a tremendous tour de force by the local Organizing Committee. Waldner’s position is still not enviable: “The team has done a fabulous job. Normally, miracles only happen in Lourdes, but now we have witnessed a miracle right here in Val Gardena/Gröden, too. There have only been three cold nights, enough for the team to produce the snow necessary to cover the entire course.

The snow situation has lead the Organizing Committee and FIS to make a change to the program. Waldner: “We have decided to slightly change the order of things. This is especially due to the fact that there is only a very think snow-layer on the section between Ciaslat and the Finish. By reversing the order of the races, we will have fewer alteration on the course moving it from one type of race to the other. Teams have been informed with ample time to prepare, so this should not be an issue.”

Markus Walnder, who has been Race Director of the Europa Cup seems to manage his ascent to the World Cup without a hitch. At least here at home he has made a huge impression on all.
