Weirather’s record broken
With his first downhill success Germany’s Max Rauffer set some new records in the 35-year-old-history of the Saslong slope in Val Gardena.
It was in total the fourth time, that athletes run on a shortened course. Already in 1980, 1983 and 1996 the organizers had to shorten the course, because of the bad weather conditions. This year Rauffer broke the 24-year-lasting record of Austria’s Harti Weirather, pulling down the winner’s time of 2,40 sec. But with his first victory in the FIS Ski World Cup, Rauffer set other two records. Firstly, he is the only German athlet to be winning on the Saslong and secondly he is the downhiller with the most little lead on his rivals (Jörg Grünenfelder from Switzerland got second with +5/100 distance). Furthermore, Rauffers triumph increased the successful countries on the Saslong from seven to eight.
