A portrait of Steven Nyman

We decided to find out a bit more for you about Steven Nyman, the outsider who surprised everyone by winning the downhill race on the Saslong.

He was born in Utah, is a Mormon, his ski man is Leo Mussi the same as Kristian Ghedina’s and he is engaged to Haley.

He was born on 12th February 1982 in Provo, Utah, and started skiing for the first time aged only two. He competed his first races in the ski area of Sundance where his father manages a ski school. Aged 17 he decided to take up skiing seriously and began training in Park City under the American coach Rob Clayton. In 2002, having completed a series of good results at FIS races, he managed to make the team USA. That same year he won the junior World Championships in Friuli, at Tarvisio.  At his first World Cup race on 9th March 2002, the slalom at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, he managed to take 5th place.  Because of a skateboard accident – his other great passion – he wasn’t able to train much in the summer of 2002. Then in March 2003 he won the American title in the downhill race. In January 2003 he fractured his left knee, but managed to recover in time to win the American Downhill title for the second time in 2005. His victory here in Val Gardena is the first in the World Cup.
