De Chiesa: “Walchhofer in the lead, but all eyes on Sulzi”
He is considered a thought leader among Italian ski experts after a long career as a skier with an impressive track record of podium places in slalom races. “Saslong is a fascinating run, where the best know how to differentiate themselves.” Walchhofer is his pick for the Downhill and Bode is expected to race well in the Super-G. However, his personal favorite is Sulzenbacher.
De Chiesa’s views on other podium contenders: “Nyman has improved tremendously, Sullivan could potentially be dangerous and Cuche has the winning DNA. I will also closely follow Guay and Hudec. Among the Italian skiers? I expect a podium place for Staudacher, while Fill is still volatile and might profit from limiting his work load. He would do well focusing on Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom.” His words of advice to Moelgg, another talented skier and local hero, is to focus on Slalom and Giant Slalom given his problems with his back. Among potential younger skiers he points to Innerhofer and Heel. South Tyrol proves yet again to have a deep bench of talented athletes.
