A total of 64 international women’s and men’s races have taken place in the valley over the course of the last four decades. The competitions were followed by million of TV viewers worldwide.

Extensive upgrading of the course has been accomplished last year. Several parts of the slope have been widened to improve safety and visibility. The Organizing Committee in cooperation with the lift company began working on these improvements a few years ago. Starting with broadening the Sochers-Wall, then the Camel Humps, the Ciaslat Entry, the Finish Bridge and, finally, the Finish Schuss. Technical improvements on the slope are completed and will also benefit recreational skiers. Adapting the course to the standards set by FIS, the International Ski Federation will provide course setters with increased flexibility. A jump shortly before the finish area has turned the Gardena-Gröden downhill race into one of the most spectacular races in the World Cup.
