Honoring Jean-Daniel Dätwyler
Saslong’s first winner will be honored at the Super-G award ceremony and subsequent bib distribution on the Antonius square in Ortisei-St.Ulrich on Friday, December 19th starting at 5:45 p.m.
The winner was Jean-Daniel Dätwyler. The Swiss downhill specialist Jean-Daniel Dätwyler celebrated his first World Cup victory in the first World Cup race on the Saslong.
February 14th, 1969 marks the birth of the Saslong as a World Cup downhill course. Less than two years after Gardena-Gröden was awarded the 1970 Ski World Championships and one year prior to the actual WC, the newly-built course at the foot of the Saslong Mountain received its baptism of fire.
„The snow was soft, which was optimal for me. The slope wasn’t very technical and made up for it in speed; the average speed was at around 107 km/h.“ says Dätwyler who back then was viewed as the best glider in the World cup. The downhill race in Gardena-Gröden was Dätwyler’s first important victory at the international level. Jean-Daniel Dätwyler grew up in Villars near Montreaux in the Swiss Canton of Waadt. The 63-year-old is father of two girls and runs a sports equipment store.
