Celebration in Ortisei-St.Ulrich: a tribute paid to Jean-Daniel Dätwyler

Bib numbers were drawn for tomorrow’s Downhill race and Jean-Daniel Dätwyler was honored as the winner of the first World Cup race on the Saslong in a beautifully decorated and tightly packed St.Antonius Square in Ortisei-St.Ulrich. The winner of today’s Super-G as well as past skiing champions from Gardena-Gröden were also onstage.

The happiest of them all was certainly Jean-Daniel Dätwyler at yesterday’s celebration in Ortisei-St.Ulrich: “This is a very special day for me because it is here that I won my first World Cup race. And all I can say to those who want to know if I would still like to ski the course is that it is not the desire, but my legs that are probably not up to that challenge any more. The course has changed significantly since 1969 just as much as the quality of the snow. But the feeling of being here tonight is unique.” The evening concluded with the bib draw for tomorrow’s Downhill race as well as the award ceremony for today’s Super-G which include South Tyrolean Werner Heel, Swiss Didier Defagno and Patrik Järbin who is originally from Sweden but live in the U.S.
