Bloomberg.com described Steven Nyman’s performance in Gardena/Gröden as a second career victory, the first coming on the same course in 2006. “Weather was a huge factor ... This is the best gift I could have.”

The Associated Press reports that Steve Nyman took advantage of changing conditions for an improbable win in a World Cup downhill. “I’m pretty psyched” adding “When I heard Rok coming on the lead I was like, `Right on, the door is open,'" Nyman said. "I hit the soft snow in some places, but I nailed the line I wanted to hit and just kept working the terrain and searching for my tuck everywhere I could and it was good. ... It was awesome.” Further: “I had a lot of confidence and then I lost it because of the injuries, but now it's back," Nyman said. "It's just been a journey. I've always believed I had the speed and I hope to continue proving it throughout the year - that's my goal: consistency.”

Reuters also gives a little more background on the decision that lead to shorten the course and delay the race reporting that “Heavy snowfalls forced two delays to the race and it finally took place two hours behind schedule on a shortened course to enhance visibility. The classic Val Gardena downhill had been stopped last season because of gusty winds and the International Ski Federation clearly did not want it called off again.”

SkiRacing also reports on Svindal’s second career win and the new format of the race: “Downhill racing is not for the meek and this fog delayed race on a track shortened by overnight snow underscored that hugely.” adding: “It was a day built for upsets. It was a day built for Nyman.”
