Silvano Varettoni Wins Both FIS Super-G Races

The Italian Silvano Varettoni won the two well-attended FIS Raiffeisen Challenge Super G races under ample sunshine and superb snow conditions on Piz Sella in Val Gardena/Gröden.

He prevailed in the first race with 1:28.45 minutes, ahead of his two team mates Henri Battilani (+0.29) and Peter Fill (+0.68). In the second Super-G, the 30-year-old from the province of Belluno set a time of 1:28.81 minutes, beating the two Swiss Niels Hintermann (+0.09) and Ralph Weber (+18). The next best Italian Azzurro was Henri Battilani in fourth place. The first downhill training took place following the two super-Gs races, with the fastest time scored by Pawel Babickl from Poland of 1.26.96 minutes ahead of Swiss Nils Mani (+0.35) and the South Tyrolean Dominik Zuech (+0.48). A total of 140 athletes from 15 nations took part in both competitions.

Two Downhill races are on the docket for tomorrow in Val Gardena/Gröden. The two combined slaloms were canceled by the jury due to scheduling reasons.

The Saslong Classic Club organized a total of four FIS races concluding the winter season. The competitions were originally planned for December, but had to be postponed due to lack of snow.
