Online Clippings from Saturday

Two topics dominated the reporting on the Downhill World Cup race in Val Gardena/Gröden: Aksel Lund Svindal’s great victory and the accident of Matthias Mayer.

The Press published APA articles on the races with the title: “Val Gardena/Gröden Downhill: Svindal celebrates 30th World Cup victory “( ). On the other hand, Blick emphasizes “Super Elk Svindal triumphs also in the Downhill“ ( ). The Sportschau integrates a German athlete into the tile: “Svindal wins Gröden Double, Ferstl shows daring deed“ ( ). A big theme in Austrian news was the continued lack in medals.

Since 2008, no Austrian has won a Downhill on the Saslong. “Val Gardena/Gröden Downhill a big enigma for Austrians“ ( ) is how the Vorarlberger Nachrichten report on the day’s events.

Also the Italian media write about Svindal’s win and Mayer’s accident, but also about Fill’s 4th place. This from “In the Downhill it’s a celebration for Norway: Svindal wins. A wonderful Fill in 4th”

( ) and focusing on the Austrian’s accident in another article: “What a wipe-out for Mayer! Saved by the airbag”

( ). Same for “Svindal wins Downhill in Val Gardena/Gröden, bad accident for Mayer saved by the airbag”

Andrew Dampf of the AP focuses on both the Svindal’s historic win of the Downhill as well as Mayer’s inflated airbag “Svindal finally wins Val Gardena downhill; safety air bag inflates in Mayer’s crash” ( ) and CBC Sports of Canada happily reports that “Erik Guay places 5th in men’s World Cup downhill” ( French L’Equipe celebrates 2nd placed Guillermo Fayed quoting: “What more could I have wished for”.
